Take a Bite with The Breakfast Club

First of all, the reason why I decided to take movie review as the theme of this blog is that I have actually this lazy attitude reading books. At first, I usually read it but later on after two to five chapters I actually feel bored. Maybe because I am bothered seeing those thick pages and bunch of papers or maybe because I feel sleepy whenever I read through a period of time. Yet, please do not judge me as if I do not really like books. I do love books but the way on how it must be use is something that I am not really quiet used of. That is where and why I came to love watch movies. Instead of reading books I prefer to watch them. Yes, it is also time consuming to watch a one to two hours of a film yet still more convenient (for me) than reading a hundred page of a book. But then I had this friend that always encourage me to still try to read a book because he says that when stories on book were made to film lots of important details or scenes were actually cut out. Indeed, what is important for me is to know what is that story all about and what can I learn from it that I could use in my everyday life. In the end it does not matter if we read or watch, what is important is that we learned something and we are able to apply it in our real life and we were be able to share it with others.

Overview: The story was all about five teenagers who were detained in their school library for them to learn their lessons. They were five total strangers, with nothing in common, meeting for the first time naming: Claire the princess, Andrew the athlete, John the criminal, Brian the brain, and Allison the basket case. They were asked by Mr. Vernon one of their teacher to write a minimum of no less than a thousand word essay during that time about who they think they are. At the beginning of those nine hours, each, if they were indeed planning on writing that essay, would probably write something close to what the world sees of them, and what they have been brainwashed into believing of themselves. Before the day was over, they broke the rules. Bared their souls and touched each other in a way they never dreamed possible.

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE MOVIE

“Dear Mr. Vernon
We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong but we think you’re crazy to make us write an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you wanna see us, in the simplest terms with the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each of us is a brain, an athlete, a basket case, princess, and a criminal. Does that answer your question?

Sincerely yours,
The Breakfast Club”

This was the opening statement of the movie “The Breakfast Club”, and to spoil some parts this is also the closing statement that I think actually made this film unforgettable. As an obsess movie fanatic the first thing that I consider for me to continue watch a film is that if I am hook with its very first scene. The Breakfast Club is a film which was produced 33 years ago and for us to think, we can consider this as an old film yet I assured you that with this old film you can get a lot of golden lessons to learn from.

All of the characters were five total strangers and they only met once. This classic film is very timeless because until now the characters portrayed and issues tackled were very essential especially for the teenagers nowadays. The movie actually reflects how and what were the struggles of teenagers who were born with high expectations and pressures given by their parents. Some were expected to be tough, some were to become intelligent, some were to become graceful and demure, and some were expected to always become winners. In simple words, stereotyping. The movie makes me feel that I was like in a closet locked and cannot even move. Imagine yourself being restricted by these stereotypes; you cannot express who you really are. The worse thing in the film is that their own parents are the one keeping them, holding them for what must they become. Isn’t it that parents should be the one who must guide us for us to discover who we really are? I think this is the reason why even now at present times teenagers become rebellious because they feel that nobody cares for them. They become attention seeker just to feel they still existing, which is wrong. Instead of making troubles they must use that as an inspiration for them to discover who they really are and established a good and strong self identity.

People see us as they want too see us, what I mean is that we cannot stop other people to judge us but what we can do is to prove them wrong. Nobody can’t tell who we really are, just us. As far as I know we are continuously growing, developing and changing. We should not forbid ourselves to become happy expressing who we really are. Go out in our own comfort zones and start conquer the world.
